The Red Grouse is a medium-sized bird, the male is larger than the female. In addition it has a plump body, a short tail and a lightly hook-tipped bill. It is reddish brown, with it’s legs and feet mostly covered in pale feathers. As a result the Birds breed in the UK in the uplands of the north and west and are resident all year around. Consequently travelling very little in their lives. The population has also been decreasing in recent years. mainly because of the loss of heather moorland and also the spread of diseases. In addition they generally forage on Heather, seeds, berries, and insects.

The Plover is a small, dumpy, short-legged wading bird. It is brownish grey above and whitish below. It has an orange bill, tipped with black, orange legs and a black and white pattern on it’s head and breast. In flight it shows a broad white wing-stripe. Breeds on beaches around the coast, but has also now breeding inland in sand and gravel pits and former industrial sites. Many UK birds live here all year round, but birds from Europe winter in Britain and birds from Greenland and Canada pass through on migration.
